Same Sex Dates Rattles High School Prom
58So, here we go again in Jackson, Mississippi. Not racial discrimination but, what is it, gender or sex discrimination? And, of course the ACLU grabbed onto this case like cat loves tuna, threatening the school district was lawsuits for this discrimination and that discrimination. And all lesbian Constance McMillen wanted to do was go to the prom with HER girlfriend and pretend to be a guy by wearing a tuxedo. The school said no. The students said no. The school cancelled the prom, ruining it for all seniors.
Motives. Does anyone really believe that Constance simply wanted to go to the prom with her lover girlfirend and NOT try to make a statement about her sexual preference, NOT want to cause an issue, knowing full well, that most of the school shunned her or other gays? Like many gays infused with what their rights are, whether or not correct, they like to be "in your face" about this especially in public. Some gays are more discreet about this in public because they know many will not accept it and we all really need to live together because there are all types. To deny this is just being a stupid redneck.
I am sure Constance did it with intent to cause a controversy, despite how innocent she pretends to be. The ACLU naturally championed her cause and as a result, the school is not having the prom. The ACLU cited that the teenager's rights of freedom of expression (wearing a tuxedo) and policy of banning same sex prom dates, violated their rights.
If the ACLU wins, schools and school districts will lose much of their power to decide what is appropriate and what is not. It will not just stop with a tuxedo or same sex whatever that or that. It will empower teenagers, which are naturally rebellious, to challenge more school policies. The freedom of expression is a real can of worms. It would allow students to wear whatever they want. You can see how a student might wear a see through blouse, or a dude wearing gang regalia to incite other gangs and then scream, "hey, it is freedom of expression".
High school students are already exposed to the gay culture via everywhere, many could care less, others are greatly offended. Let the student's vote about what is right for their school when special events occur and some students want to push the envelope. They have to see each other everyday, not he ACLU.
Let the majority decide. Gays that push their agenda or lifestyle upon non-gay society are doing it with intent. Everyone does not have to accept that lifestyle. When my gay friends cross the line in what they do, and I am around, I tell them to cool it. We have an odd respect for one another. We both understand one another. Each knows the other's boundaries. That is how we are friends. If they were radical gays, it would quite a different story.

You've hit the nail on the head! I think it's a shame for all the other seniors to loose out on their prom. I agree with what you've said completely. And I hope the school wins.
Do you not understand the meaning of the word discrimination?
If you want people to believe you when you say you are not against gays then remove the search tag "fag" from your hub.
It doesnt matter what this persons intent was, or are you saying that gay couples shouldnt be in public.
Just get used to it because thats the way things are now, the christ stains have lost.
Perhaps you should clearly define what 'getting in your face with it' means. Of course Constance just wanted to go to prom with her girlfriend, and of course she knew that it would raise controversy. If Constance was allowed to attend prom with the person she loved like everyone else, and be seen in public like everyone else, just how is that getting in anyone's face.
It doesn't bear witness to anyone's approval of homosexual love, but it certainly says a lot about the narrow mindedness of a community that would rather cancel prom than see a same sex couple dance together.
Constance is a hero. Much like the first African American's who peacefully sat at the lunch counter in Mississippi and, I guess "got in people's face" about being black.
I respect the strong feelings that motivated the cancellation of prom, but how unfair to everyone who looked forward to that right of passage event. They should have had the prom and simple put a sign on the door "Straights Only". How dare she expect equal treatment in America.
I'm not even going to start on the whole "life-style choice" fiasco.
You never answered richard when he asked whether black people were "getting in peoples faces" "push thier narrow agenda on the majority knowing full well there will be a reaction from someone" by being "in such a way."
These are the exact same things said about black people, saying that gay people shouldnt be as expressive as straight people about their love in public is both saying that there is something wrong (there is nothing wrong with gays any more than black) and is discrimination.
It is really sad that prom was canceled for all those kids because it is a rite of passage. However, this young woman should have been allowed to attend with her girlfriend. What I don’t understand is why exactly the prom was canceled. Was it because she wanted to come with her girlfriend or because she wanted to dress in a tuxedo? I think it was because of the tuxedo (if I read the above hub correctly) and I think it is huge jump to say that if the school had let her wear the tuxedo the next thing we know girls would be wearing see-through dresses and others will be wearing ‘gang dress’. The see-through dress is directly inappropriate because of how and who is wearing it (a teenage girl) and the ‘gang dress’ is inappropriate because it would, assumedly, endanger the student body. Neither the tuxedo nor the girl are offensive by themselves nor is it offensive the way she would be wearing it (the way any male would wear it). The offensive part is the fact that it is a gay girl wearing it (remembering the actual clothing on any male would be fine) is what makes it decimation. She has a right to wear the tux and if a girl wearing a tux is radical to this community there is a whole world of radical things these kids will be exposed to if they leave.
Also, she probably did want to make a statement; after all she is a teenage who is gay in a community where apparently it is hard to express yourself as young gay women. Good for her in coming out in the first place and drawing more national attention to gay rights.
Good job on the above two comments. Well reasoned. I still want a definition from our host as to just what "radically gay" means. This will go along way to answer my original question, what does "in your face" mean. Is it giving hand jobs under the restaurant table or is it merely holding hands, cuddling at the theater, and lounging on a blanket together at the park. It is also important to note that it hasn't been that long ago that racially mixed straight couples were band from the prom. If allowing people to love and cherish another person is radical, then I guess I'm a radical 40 yr old minister.
The phrase tyranny of the majority, used in discussing systems of democracy and majority rule, is the scenario in which decisions made by a majority under that system would place that majority's interests so far above a dissenting individual's interest that the individual would be actively oppressed, just like the oppression by tyrants and despots.
Do you REALLY think that the majority should rule over minoritys?
Who would get to decide how much individualism is allowed, the majority? LOLLOL
American political theorist John C. Calhoun developed the theory of Concurrent majority to deal with the tyranny of the majority. It states that great decisions are not merely a matter of numerical majorities, but require agreement or acceptance by the major interests in society, each of which had the power to block federal laws that it feared would seriously infringe on their rights. That it, it is illegitimate for a temporary coalition that had a majority to gang up on and hurt a significant minority. The doctrine is one of limitations on democracy to prevent the tyranny.
It took me a little research but I have disproven your concept that straight majoritys can tell gay minoritys that they are not acceptable in society.
I am sure they would, does that make it right for us to do it? Lololol I have no doubt that if blacks had been in our place 200 years ago they would have enslaved us whites. That is no reason that we should now go out and do the same to them is it? Your reasoning of do unto them because they would unto us does not make sense. Rebuttal rejected.
I just read this article on msn.com - I agree with what you said in one of your comments that sexual orientation is a choice not a right. I thought this was a good hub and you made some valid points.
Gay is most certainly a choice and a behavior. The radical "Gay" agenda tries to make it a matter of discrimination...but it is not. THese are people making poor choices and displaying bad behavior. Society has always had the right and the obligation to put limits and borders on certain behavior to keep the sanity and the moral principles of an orderly society in tact.
I'm glad now that there is a prom put on that all students can attend together, regardless if they are a gay couple or an interracial couple or whatever relationship they "choose." Because while we choose to be in a relationship, nobody chooses who they like or love.
It is stupid that just because someone asked if they could go to their prom with their significant other, that the schoolboard decided to ruin it for all students by cancelling it.
It's shouldn't be up to the student body nor school to pick and choose which of their students can enjoy the prom.
I guess I spoke to soon... what the parents really did is sickening.

Why would the parents collude to ruin prom for some students they don't like, including the learning disability students and lesbians? Why enforce discrimination and taunting and bullying by separating the children?
This is sickening behavior, parents should know better than this. What is wrong with them?

I'm new to this blogging but I did it to find out answers to the questions on my mind. How do we contend with people or organizations like the ACLU?
We have so many who lobby for new laws or try and change old laws. I believe Americans should be given the right to vote what they wan't for a law verses lawyers and such like them pushing new rules and laws down our throat and stop with all these friveless lawsuits.
Case in hand The girl in Mississippi, Let the kids in the school vote to see if they want the lesbian to be able to come with her lover first then let them vote if she or both of them can dress in drag. My personal opinon she should not be given the right to come if the majority of people don't agree with it.
