President Karzai Compromises Women's Rights in Afghanistan
Men are Fundamental, Women are Secondary
US troops have not even left yet, and President Karzai of Afghanistan is already reducing some of the hard fought for rights of women as the Taliban insist during so called "negotiations". Most of those rights that Afghanistan women now enjoy will be cutback or removed as the state appointed 150 Muslim clerics demand the strict application of Islamic law. In this country, women are secondary citizens, not much better than an maid and servant for many households. In fact, women are looked upon that way by many men.
This seems to be part of the conditions for negotiation, which could bring women's rights (based on western ideals) back to when US troops arrived 10 years ago. Karzai will simply end up being a puppet for them when US influence ends. Sadly, both Karzai and the US are going along with the demand so to get into negotiations with them. Why? Why do women there have to sacrifice their right to vote, hold office, go to school or hold a job? That was the way it was when the US arrived, now, we are caving into Taliban demands. I guess this means the Afghanistan really was a total waste because things will return to the way they were. Once the US leaves, few doubt that Karzai and the government will remain for very long. The Taliban will attempt to overthrow it and enforce another Islamic state.
Most ironic, is that Karzai said negotiating with the Taliban would strengthen the status of women's rights there. How? Well, women under Islamic law would actually be an improvement when compared to how Afghanistan customs are toward women.
This is simply the worse of two evils.
