Toyota is Not the Only One!

I began researching my next car before making any firm decision. Subaru's are great, but I was liking the Nissan Murano. So I started to reseach on the web at the usual car sites, Vehix, Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds for consumer blogs and forums. I started to find a common, disturbing thread between all Murano consumers. These were people who loved Nissan and the Murano from 2003-2009. The common thread that has caused me not to buy the Murano is the universal serious problem with the CVT transmission and Transfer Plate which costs $4-6000 to replace when it cracks or fails, which usually occurs between 65,000 or miles. Nissan claims it is the consumer's fault because the tranny is not replaced with new fluid (cost $600) every 30,000 miles, yet, as owners state, the manual makes no mention of this at all. Worse, Nissan knew of the defect and as you will read, having the tranny go out in traffic can be very dangerous and there is absolutely no warning from sensors etc. The symptoms may lead one to think it is a fuel injection issue or brake. Murano's have been complained about to the NTSB, and nothing happens, just like with Toyota and their accelerator issue.  If you own a Murano made between 2003-8, respond to this post and let others know of your problems.

Anyone that has a Transmission failure due to faulty design and pressure sensor please post your complaint to this website: www.nhtsa.dot.gov. This is the national highway transportation safety administration and deals with these kinds of safety issues and manufacturers that do not want to acknowledge defects in their products. Please fill out the complaint form, the more of us that do will make a bigger difference in the response.

"My car (Nissan Murano) has been doing the surge and losing power thing.....ever since I bought it. On the freeways, highways, and in town in heavy traffic and in freezing temps. I have taken the car in two times and the mechanic tells me that he can not see an error code. To bring the car back the next time it happens again. I did and he thought that he fixed it that time. My friend drove it with her children to pick me up from the airport and it started to do that losing power thing on the freeway. This is really dangerous! My friends have been with me on a road trip out of town and we weren't sure if we would make it home. The vehicle just decides it will not move forward or backward, or it will move, but very slowly and builds speed and surges forward!"

"A significant number of CVT and Front Transfer Case (cracks/fractures) issues from late models all the way up to my 2009.

"Nissan's Tom Naquin & Corporate were not helpful at all & blamed lack of oil change on my fractured Transfer Case. This - even after a loose electrical cable locked me on AWD for awhile a few months prior to this incident & my maintenance manual never mentioned any required oil changes per Schedules 1 & 2"

"We got rid of our 2004 Murano too. I was sad, because I really did like the vehicle. I filed a complaint with NTSB too, but so far no luck. I don't understand, Toyota issues a mass recall, but Nissan doesn't? The 2003 and 2004 Murano's have a known problem with the CVT and transfer case."

"Don't be fooled! Nissan is experiencing numerous problems with their CVT's but refuses to officially recall thevery defective transmission design. Nissan has taken an "arrogant" position on this issue. My '03 Murano SE has had been in the shop 3 times with CVT problems the last was a total failure. The cost was $6300"

"I had a tapping sound (thought it was a tire). It grew louder and became a banging sound. Took it to Nissan Dealer. I have 105,000 miles on my Nissan Murano AWD 2004.
They called and said my differential caused my transmission to go bad so they couldn't cover the repairs under the extended warranty. The estimate was $9400 for new transmission, transfer case and differential."

" I also have a 2004 Nissan Murano that I purchased December 2008......low mileage aprox. 33,000 miles. About 3 weeks it totally broke down on me....had to have it towed into the dealer and the diagnosis was damage to the Front Transfer Case. Since then, I have been battling with my extending warranty folks....still no luck. Total damages estimated thus far as $4800.....absolutlely ridiculous!!!!!!! "

"My Transfer Case components fractured at 72k mi. Nissan, w/ no investigation, concluded it was my fault for not changing the oil. I disagreed & complained to Nissan Consumer Affairs: 1) My '05-Manual does NOT even require oil change under Schedules 1&2 - confirmed by Kings Nissan. 2) A Naquin Tech mentioned running AWD on dry pavement is another potential cause. 3) A loose wire caused the SES & AWD light to stay-ON & vehicle would not run more than 20mph at 70k mi. (felt like trans/powertrain restricted)."

"It happened to me again a couple of weeks ago on my drive home at night. So scary! I was turning in an intersection and my car wouldn't react to my gas pedal. It hesitated, then lurched before finally catching up to speed. It's a miracle that I didn't get in an accident."

"The 2003 has a problem with the transmission and the 2004 has a problem with the transfer case. It is unacceptable that a $30,000 plus vehicle needs a repair that costs 40% of the residual value of it. They know it's a problem but until someone files a class action suit against them, not sure they will stand behind their product."

"Wow, can't believe how many Murano owners have the same problem. Wish I would have known this before buying mine 11 months ago. Mine just went yesterday, 5 months after the power train warranty ran out. I contacted Nissan and they said 'too bad, so sad" and they won't do a darn thing about it. My cost will be $3700 for 112,000 km's. I'm royally ticked off at Nissan for the fact this is happening to a lot of Murano owners and they should do a recall and cover this for all owners."

"My 2003 Murano transmission was replaced in Sept of '06. I was driving home from a vacation in Maine and the problem occurred in stop and go traffic on the Mass Turnpike. Thankfully was able to get car, cat and two kayaks off the turnpike before being hit. Car towed 12 miles to closest Nissan dealer. Had to rent car to drive back to Ohio. My car was there from Sept 4 through Oct 1. Had to have friend fly back to pick up car and drive back to Cincinnati."

"What’s even more disturbing is the service bulletin Nissan issued below (NTB04129). It appears to be a design defect in the transfer case of the older models and the company resolved this issue beginning with the 2005 models. Below it states the parts that need to be replaced and once replaced the transfer case (AWD) is now upgraded and will operate like a 2005 model. Why is Nissan waiting until the transfer cases fail before they correct this flaw in the older models? In addition, they are putting the cost of this defect on the consumer stating it may have happen when using the all wheel drive on dry pavement.  I encourage you to voice this transfer case concern to the vice president of Nissan as I did via email. Kevin.Martinnissan-usa.com. Unfortunately they did not help me but if enough people with the same problem let it be heard, Nissan just might change the warranty extension and reimburse for previous transfer case repairs."

"The common theme I hear in many posts is you report the smell from the leak and they tell you nothing is wrong and the damage continues to the parts that are leaking. We are on our second dealer and 4 visit to repair this problem. Makes you wish you would have dumped the vehicle a long time ago. Love the Murano but will never buy another one because the dealers seem unable to identify and repair the them when needed. "

"Our 04 Murano's CVT failed last week at 30K. Pedal to the metal and it would barely move, then suddenly took off. The dealer is replacing it under warranty but it seems to me that an automatic transmission should last longer than 3 years/30K miles."

"I just bought a used Murano last week and I think I have the same problem. I press the gas pedal and the car doesn't move until the RPM is over 1000 and then it just kinda surges forward a bit. I didn't notice it during the test drive and it just showed up after being stuck in traffic in LA for about 2 hrs. I'm a little disappointed, a little mad, a little confused, and everything else! "

"I have had my 2004 Murano in the shop multiple times since I bought it 1-1/2 years ago (including a month long visit for a transmission rebuild, so they said). I bought it used with 8k miles on it, what a great deal I thought I got. The car randomly becomes unresponsive at acceleration, but it coasts, bringing me into intersections and highways. I've had it in several times, but they just cant duplicate the problem."

" I finally traded my Murano. I sued Nissan for breach of warantee. My Murano was in the shop 24 times in the 1-1/2 year period I had it and the transmission was replaced 3 times. Dealerships dont want the Muranos at all. They are worth nothing for trade, I took a $4000 hit on mine. Nissan settled out of court for $6500 so that helped. But I suggest doing something if you have constant problems. I am so happy to be rid of the night mare."

I have a 2003 Muruno - so far two manifolds - both cracked in half, both 30 days out of warranty. My biggest concern is the transfer case. I heard a light pitch whirl, I knew it wasn't gas related, but drive train related. On the way up the hill I lost speed, heard my engine rev and a clunk. I stopped immediately. The diagnosis is the transfer case. The noise never got loader than a whisper. I feel fortunate that I was going up the mountain instead of down. The cost to replace the part is 50% of the value. What a rock and a hard spot. I have 155m miles, and love the car until the last 60 days. I decided to fix the transfer case, with the hope and prayer that this will last this time.

Well, I was going to buy a 2005-06, with 60K on them. But, after reading soooo many CVT issues for the car, I decided to stick with subaru outback. The murano is a car you love or hate depending on when the problems arise!

All companies need to be held to high standards, especially car companies. We entrust our very lives to these companies. When things go wrong they all have to step to the plate and make things right. If they do not, we should rightly and readily vote with our wallets. It's the only way to truly get OUR message across.

According to the Nissan

http://www.nissanassist.com/ProgramDetails.php?men

First, to provide you with additional assurance regarding your overall cost of ownership we have doubled the warranty period for the Continuously Variable Transmission in your Nissan. The existing powertrain warranty coverage of 5 years/60,000 miles will be extended at no cost to you, for CVT repairs, replacements or related towing, to 10 years/120,000 miles, whichever comes first.

This extension is effective immediately and requires no action on your part. The remainder of your powertrain warranty coverage for components other than the transmission remains unchanged, at 5 years/60,000 miles, and your basic warranty coverage also remains unchanged. All other warranty terms, limitations and conditions otherwise apply. This extended transmission warranty is also fully transferable to future owners of your vehicle.

Second, Nissan will reimburse customers who have previously paid to repair or replace their CVT, if the repairs would have been covered within the new extended warranty period. Even if you no longer own your Nissan we will reimburse you for past CVT repairs that would have been covered under this extension of the warranty.

Further, in the unlikely event that your vehicle's transmission should need repair beyond the extended warranty period we are working to decrease the cost of repair and have already reduced the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of a replacement CVT. In addition, we continuously strive to enhance our products, and have made ongoing improvements to our CVTs over the years.

Nissan is taking these actions to demonstrate our confidence in the CVT technology and to show our commitment to stand behind our products.

I just took my 2004 Nissan Murano in for the 90k mile service today and to check out the kick back I've been getting when accelerating to get on the highway. The woman behind me said "oh that's what happened to mine when the transmission was about to blow". Dealer says to me, "well lucky for you, they've extended the warranty to 120k for the transmission". So, I breathe a sigh of relief and leave, thinking that at least if it's the transmission it's covered! Unfortunately, I called to check in a little before 5 and was told that it's a broken transfer case, which is not under warranty, and will cost me at least $3,000 (and several days) to repair. I've been reading all the posts on the internet and I'm disgusted that this isn't some fluke issue, that transfer cases have been a big problem for early murano owners and Nissan knows its a problem. I'm so disappointed, as I have loved this car, but have a feeling it will be my last Nissan...not even sure if I'm going to fix it or just move on.

2006 Murano AWD - 99,500 - " The Leakssan" Just rolling easy aroung a turn and the transfer case let loose...I'm getting quote from $2500-4000 for this one. Just put $1500 into tires and a right front wheel bearing and thought I was good to go for another 50K at least.

Good runner and fun for 100K but this crap is getting ridiculous. Other leaks include blown power steering high pressure hose, valve cover gasket, blown rt front CV boots, oil pan gasket, and my favorite one.. the battery and to quote the dealership.. "It's not leaking its sweating".. Sad to think they can't just retool the transfer cases a bit and fix this Major issue. But then what would they do with all the defective ones on the shelf?

Brooksy 23 months ago

My 2004 Murano transfer case just went out 2 days ago and im trying to gather information on what to do. The dealer tells me that its not covered under the newly issued warranty that covers the transmission for 10yrs/120k miles. Same story as that ive been reading from most bloggers about their Murano. As with most i was loving the heck out the vehicle, until this issue came up. Im at about 73k miles and was looking forward to having it for years to come. Now, after reading and seeing first hand Nissans' position and poor respnse to such a widespread issue, i plan to never ever buy another Nissan. Nor will i recommend any of their products to anyone i come in contact with. We, as the consumer are what keeps companies like this in business and should demand better treatment. This is a faulty product and it is no fault of our own, yet we are basically being told to go screw ourselves unless we are interested in making another bad investment with a terrible company.

Amy 23 months ago

My husband and I had a 2004 Nissan Murano loved it and I miss it. We got rid of it after we fixed the transfer case $4,000, because we figured the transmission would be next. So we got rid of it then they extended the warranty on the transmission. Even though they did not cover the transfer case, I still filled out the paperwork and sent it in for reimbursement. My husband received a call stating they were not covering the transfer case, but he said they did admit it is a problem and if they decide to correct our claim is on file and we would be reimbursed. Therefore, my recommendation send in your paperwork as if requesting reimbursement for CVT and at least you have filed a protective claim if they decide to reimburse. I'm still sick about this. You work hard and save money and it makes you sick to spend it on something like this that is a known problem corrected in the 2005 models.

It is funny how Toyota, Nissan seem to have issues with their cars, yet owners of Subaru's seem to have none of this.

Elizabeth 23 months ago

I researched for a good small used SUV and found that the Nissan Murano's got 4.5 stars out of 5. I found a 2003 that I really liked and bought it 2 weeks ago. Needless to say it ran for 4 days until I had the gas pedal issue when pulling out in traffic with my 3 kids with me. I pushed on the gas and it wouldn't do anything except roll! We almost got hit by the oncoming traffic. It continues all the way home at every light, it would just roll then take off! If I hadn't been 2 miles away from home I would of had it towed. I took into the dealer I bought it from and their mechanic said he can't find anything wrong with it and it runs great, doesn't miss a beat! It is still at the shop because I refuse to pick it up after reading all this! I told him to let me know when he actually fixes the problem because it is very dangerous and I cannot be driving my family in a car like that. This is rediculous, I did my research on reviews and all...ugh!

I guess everyone thinking of murano's to buy (as I did) should reconsider. At minimum, do NOT buy any Murano that is a pre-2007 model.

We own a 2004 Nissan Murano. The car has 78K miles and it is in the shop now getting it's fourth (4th!!!) transmission. The dealer tried to get me to pay for a diagnosis telling me it could be something other than the transmission...same symptoms everyone else has, jerking, feeling like it is in a low gear when it shouldn't be...all bad...I am going to sell it and get something else. I think it will go out of warranty and I'll be screwed. No more Nissans...too bad it was otherwise a great little SUV.

If you're dissatisfied with the Murano, as I was when I went car shopping, then check out the FX35. The interior is superb! On the flip side, the front nose is a bit long so it may take some time to get used to the driving feel. Also, keep in mind that the Murano is front-wheel drive while the FX35 is rear wheel drive. Decisions, decisions!

Got my 2005 murano with 25000 miles, 2 years later around 55,000 the transfer case cracked (complained of loud rattling, sounded like my car was going to fall apart everytime I hit a bump). Then 4 months later at 57000 the transmission goes out. It's under warranty but still a pain in the but! I was driving on the highway when it happened! Not safe! I will be getting rid of this car.

kvcarter 21 months ago

I have a 2004 Murano and have had the same problems everyone else has experienced, CVT and transfer case issues. Nissan's extended CVT warranty isn't worth a damn unless your transmission fails completely...on my car an internal component (valve body) needed to be replaced and I was told by two dealers and Nissan Consumer Affairs the warranty would not cover it even though the warranty as described on their website is "for CVT repairs, replacements or related towing"...here I sit $6k later with my fingers crossed hoping this piece of crap will last 2 more years.

Our 2008 Nissan Sentra transmission went out on us while we were driving to nevada. Have been dealing with Nissan & while they paid to replace the transmission they refuse to pay for any other expenses (including the towing to the dealership that they said they would). We were without our vehicle for 3 weeks but Nissan doesn't care. Avoid any Nissan with CVT like the plague. Feel free to join my facebook page "dont buy nissan" and share your story.

John in San Diego 21 months ago

My wife and I have collectively owned five Nissans over the years. All have performed well up until now. My wife's 2004 Murano is experiencing all the same issues the other contributors have described, especially the delayed acceleration problem. My mechanic told me the tranny is shot, that it's a problem specific to Nissan's CVT, and that Nissan wasn't doing anything to correct the problem, even though Nissan is well aware of the issue. He predicted the dealer will offer to replace a routine part identified in a service bulletin then tell us that we need a new $5,000 transmission. The fact that dealers are blaming owners for the problem is beyond insulting. The guys at the transmission shop next door to my mechanic's shop said they wouldn't touch it and that we were lucky to get 100K miles out of it. In addition to the transmission problem, my mechanic noticed a couple of normal wear and tear issues but he didn't recommend doing any repairs because he suggested we don't spend another dollar on the car. Talk about DOA (not to mention negative equity)! You know you're in trouble when two auto shops won't do any work on your car, especially in this economy. So much for brand loyalty. Obviously, I can't recommend the Murano or any Nissan product if they are unwilling to stand behind their product.

I'm starting to hear a whirling sound under ther car and the dealer told mee it's just the tires

But I bet it has to do with the transfer case. I'm really thinking it's about time everybody go to the media and stand up, atleast Honda and Toyota are admitting their fault

They can't get away with this crap anymore if I get told I gotta pay for that transfer case I'm going straight to local news and other papers!!!

DO NOT BUY A MURANO.......OR PURCHASE AT YOUR OWN RISK.....YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!

I bought my 2004 Murano used and I was so happy. I loved...loved...loved the Murano. It silver with black and chrome rims so it stands out with a lot of compliments.....until today September 28, 2010. Driving home from work in rush hour traffic I lost power....OMG....scary! I don't want this vehicle any more! I've called around and was told its my differential and that they worked on several Muranos in the past 2 yrs with the SAME ISSUE. I have so much negative equity in this vehicle it hurts. As the saying goes, "a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do"! Even though I still have love for the Murano I will NEVER buy another one. I really like the Mazda CX-7 and CX-9 so I think I will investigate them before I make another purchase.

Good luck all!

This is a badly written article, and sad to see people are falling for it. The introduction gives away the misinformation when perrya writes "the universal serious problem" and "usually occurs ...". It is not universal, it happens to a very small number of Murano owners.

As shown above, Nissan now offers an extended 10 year warranty on the transmission, which is almost unheard of with any car company. http://www.nissanassist.com/ProgramDetails.php?men

I had a Toyota Rav4 prior to my Murano and the transmission went at 50,000 miles. It cost me $7000 to fix, and was not covered by warranty. It is unfortunate and extremely upsetting when it happens to you, but I know it only happens to a small percentage of owners to so do not pay out the RAV4.

Enough of the sensationalism.

Ditto on all the issues above for our '03 Murano. Our transmission had issues almost immediately after purchasing it brand new but no one, Nissan or other service shops could tell us what was causing the problem. Replaced the transmission in the spring this year and it was covered under the "new CYA" warranty, however, now our transfer case is gone and of course that's not covered even though clearly, it was a design failure in the '03 Murano that Nissan is trying to sweep under the carpet. Like most people out here, I will never purchase another Nissan.

To the response by Grundog simply you are wrong. Poorly written or not the transfer case going on the Nissan Murano is wide spread, do a google search and you will find a leaked memo from Nissan to its service people. I do assume you have already read the leaked info, since I suspect you work for or on behalf of Nissan. The transmissions extended warranty does not cover the transfer case read the horror stories posted in this forum alone.

I have a 2004 Murano, the transfer case blew up at 51,000 and just 2 months after the factory warranty expired. The service department manager told me that is tough S***T and not their F***ing problem (exact words). Told me it would be about 9,000$ to fix since he was pretty sure he would be replacing the rear end as well. Sounds like a rare event when they actually can state the follow on damage. I had it towed out of the dealership within the hour, local transmission shop fixed it for 4,500 and it will be traded in today. Lesson learned I will never as much as step foot in a Nissan dealership again, 35,000$ vehicle needing major repairs at 50,000 miles is just shameful.

I would suggest that the others that have had this happen to them send a letter off to their state's attorney general office, local news station and even the US attorney generals office. Since Nissan feels no obligation to fix a obviously flawed product maybe if enough of us report them we can at least save others from going through this and maybe even have them held accountable for their product.

I have an 03 SE. Tranfer case went out around 115, 000 miles last July. I saved a few hundred by getting the part from a salvage yard. When it was replaced they checked the cvt and said it was fine, just needed a little fluid. Shortly after my Murano started to vibrate after start up like it was misfiring. Got a tune up which seem to work but it started back up. to A few cold mornings it started vibrating, SES light started blinking and didn't want to accelerate. Sounds like the typical CVT complaint but its at start up and not even moving. I've taken it in and they say it drives perfectly and no code saved about the SES. Now I have 122,000 miles which is much better than the average here.

I purchased an 09 Muarno in 08 which now has 78K. I first reported a loud popping noise at initial take off to Nissan around 45K. I took several trips to the dealer but, was unable to get them to hear the noise after several test drives. Its getting worse so, I decided to google the problem. After reading this post, I am taking the vehicle back tomorrow. I have the extended 100K warrenty so, I hope they don't play me stupid again. In the past, I have been a strong Nissan advocat but, I am second guessing that now. ???

OMG! OMG! After our 2003 Murano started acting up we decided to research and we came up with thousands of complaints of the same kind. Now we know we are totally screwed. We owe bout 50% of the vehicle and it seems that too fix it will cost the same or more. Our stories are the same as many. We are driving down the high way and the car decelerates and then picks up in gear. Very dangerous indeed!! Going from 55 mile per hour to not having any power at all. On these cases I have had to pull over turn off the car and back on. This seems to help for a couple of miles. To furthermore our problem we are starting to hear the swirling sound in the front of the car. After reading the comments above, we know what king of BS we will hear at the dealer. We fear the worst. Drive train or a combination of CVT . We encourage people to post there concerns in websites like this one. Nissan has sold us a product that is more of a danger to you and your love ones. We will NEVER purchase another Nissan after going through this. From a company that is not standing behind their product. They should have recalled this car if this is a known issue a long time ago.We will take out car in tomorrow and we know whats coming.

Wow! I thought that I was to blame for using the AWD lock button. Now I see that my $4195 repair bill to replace the transfer case, control button and other stuff was not actually my fault but a problem with the design. I have also noticed recently that my car loses power sometimes. I have noticed it when I am trying to get through an intersection and suddenly there is no power to get me through it quickly. Luckily there was no traffic coming right at me or else I would have been hit. The dealership (Nissan) told me it was my fault for using the AWD lock on dry pavement, however, it has been really snowy and slippery lately. They quoted me 4200 plus taxes to fix and they would not cover it under any warranty. They also said that since my vehicle is second hand and I am the second owner, I cannot be covered for the extended warranty on the Transmission. Is this correct? They said the warranty had to be transferred within 30 days of the change in ownership. I am starting to get really scared that my beloved Murano is going to be causing me a whole heap of headaches. I love this vehicle. However, I cannot afford to keep paying repair bills of $2000 for my drivers seat that came loose from the flooring as well the suspension and now the $4000 transfer case issue!!!! Who can I contact to complain about this?

The dealership wants $2700 for a warranty on top of sticker price.I've only heard great things about Nissan until now, and I've previously had 2 pathfinders, both were great. Any bad word on Xterra's? I'm thinking about one of those.

Have an 04 Murano that I purchased brand new. Last week at 85000 miles, transmission went out. Was covered under the extended warranty that Nissan just released. When I brought my vehicle last month because it was stalling in traffic, the service person told me that I didn't change my oil often enough, that the oil was very low and that I possibly ruined my engine. Didn't have a oil leak and I change my oil every 3000-3500 miles. Needless to say, the transmission gave out less than a month later. I now have a grinding sound while turning. I'm assuming it has something to do with the CV joints. Could this be due to changing out the transmission? I would also like to formally complain, which agency/company should I send a letter?

Ima Moon Hopper 15 months ago

just had all new gaskets(transfer case) and seals (axels) installed in my '03 Murano SE AWD two weeks ago. Two days ago my "service engine soon" light came on. Mechanic scanned for codes and now I'm being told the codes are telling us it's CVT related. With only 98,500 miles, I'm shocked to be having these kinds of problems. All my GM vehicles went at least 200,000 before needing major work.

I lost all power to my 07 Murano today while pulling into a highway.... very scary almost got rearended. Below is a complaint I filed with the nhtsa.

I felt a vibration coming from my 2007 Nissan Murano and I took it to the dealer and they said they didn't feel it. Took it back a second time and they said that they had overserviced the cvt(transmission) at a prior service interval. They said they reset the fluid level. Took the car and it still vibrated... a week later I was pondering how to file a comlaint. Today I was heading to the airport when the car completely lost all power to the cvt. I was entering the highway and I felt the engine just rev up and the car wasn't moving forward with my foot on the gas pedal. A car almost slammed me in the rear end and I pulled over to the side of the road and called a tow truck and towed the car to the dealer. The dealership failed to recognize that the CVT should have been replaced and that there is also a recall on the cvt. This put me and anyone who was in my car in a dangerous situation where it could have ended up tragically if someone had hit me on the driver side if I was making a left turn and my car lost power.

homeskillet 15 months ago

So is this just primarily a problem with the SE version. The SL, at least the 2005 model, does not come with AWD so no transfer case.

If so, I lucked out. I didn't buy the SE because I couldn't justify the extra cash for AWD and I liked the 5 spoke wheels that came with the SL better. Lately, I have been a little bummed because the SE came with the sport tuned suspension (even though I cannot find exactly what is different since all the part numbers are the same between the SE and SL).

So far I have loved my Murano. And, I am probably stuck with it for longer than I originally planned due to a baby on the way. Hopefully, me being cheap has finally paid off.

If you have a Nissan Murano and have had trouble with the transfer case cracking or failed....please go and respond to this poll!! We need to stand together to make Nissan admit that their transfer cases are faulty and should be recalled!

http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/66-problems/741

Transfer case poll on Nissanmurano.org.

On March 2, 2011, my 2003 Nissan Murano (mileage 95,000km) started making a strange clicking noise under the hood. It sounded like there was a rock in the tire or a loose part under the front end. By March 3, 2001, the noise was upgraded to a loud banging, with the whole front end of the vehicle shaking. I took the Murano to my mechanic Touchette Auto in Ottawa on March 4, 2010 for a diagnostic and was later contacted March 7, 2010 and told that the noise was a transmission issue and that I had to take it to a transmission specialist. I started my search online for problems of this nature and was astounded to find that the CVT transmission issue is a huge problem in the 2003 Nissan Murano....so much so that I am surprised that a class action lawsuit has not been taken up with Nissan!

I contacted my warranty company and they advised me that the transmission issue would be covered by Nissan because of the Extended Warranty related to the CVT tranmission for up to 10 years/120,000 km. I was relieved to hear this and promptly took my Murano to receive attention at 417 Nissan, 1599 Star Top, Gloucester, Ontario (613)749-9417. Today, March 8, 2010, I received a call from John GOOD of 417 Nissan with my diagnostic results. I was told that the problem was NOT the transmission but gave me a list of problems as follows:

>

-cracked transfer case

-transmission seal (x2--apparently for each end of the transmission.)

-catalytic converter

-O2 sensor

-switch control unit

-subframe

The quote for this repair? $6333.00 plus diagnostic cost! Mr. GOOD said that none of this was covered by the extended warranty!! I went back to A-Protect Warranty Corporation and was advised that the Nissan quote was ridiculous and that all of those issues are related to the transmission. They said that they could direct me to another transmission mechanic who would repair the vehicle for much cheaper and that they would only cover $400.00 of the repairs.

I know that I am not the first person to contact Nissan Canada regarding this issue. I am not being unreasonable when I say that Nissan is trying to pass the buck by claiming that the transfer case/seals are not covered by the Extended CVT Warranty. It has been the subject of many complaints and I know that Nissan has paid for the repairs when they have been pushed against the wall. The CVT Transmission has been a headache for Nissan and I can\'t believe that when customers ask for compensation, they are being turned away with a \"sorry, we can\'t help you.\"

How can a part-the transfer case-and the seals on either end of the transmission---which are all directly related to this faulty CVT transmission not be considered part of the warranty coverage? If I tell you right now that I don\'t have $6333.00 to fix the vehicle and I drive it until the transmission blows up, will Nissan cover the damage then(under the Extended Warranty of course!)

>

I have now spent the last 2 weeks being bounced back and forth, trying to have someone offer assistance in this matter. I have spent hours on the phone with Nissan customer service reps in Canada and the US and no one wants to help me. I have never been so frustrated with a company and I will not just walk away quietly, accepting the cop out of Nissan on standing by their product!! I am viewing over 500 complaints on Edmunds.com regarding Nissan\'s unwillingness to help their customers. That is only one website.....I can list many more!

FYI...417 Nissan offered to buy my Nissan as is for $2000! What a slap in the face! I only bought it less than a year ago for $15K...with only 85,000 km on it!

Yes,I too have succumb to this aggonizing lighting of bank account.

My 2004 Murano,which I thought would be a great buy,and of course

I made a graving mistake of purchasing. The transfer case only lasted

a month and a half before being crippled,I took the Murano to the nearest

dealership. They told it was the transfer case, and then they drop the bomb

I was told it cannot be rebuilt, well,I knew then I should of stayed with my

Toyota's.

I ,then, phoned Nissan Canada about this issue, and I was told they could

not assist in the repairs.

I knew then I will tell all my friends not to purchase any Nissan vehicles.

Needless to say my repair bills have reached well above 7500.00 dollars,

I'm now putting my Murano on the selling block, and getting my Toyota again.

I've also experienced up and down exceleration on the highway, even when in cruise control. Has anyone had this problem and what was the diagnosis? I've been to the dealership on numerous occations and they say they can't find anything wrong.

Hi Everyone!

I have a 2003 Nissan Murano. I took it to Sterling McCall Nissan yesterday, my car was turning off while I was driving down the road! Found out that this was a RECALL R3022 - the crank position sensor... and cam position sensor need to be replaced. Nissan Corporation REFUSED to fix my vehicle under the recall because my VIN number was not listed, even though the service dept. said that this was the recall problem! Last person I spoke with was VALERIE at 1-866-799-1690 X1442 SHE WAS TERRIBLE HORRIBLE AND WOULD GIVE ME NO OTHER ANSWERS OTHER THAN... your vin # does not match the recall! She would not let me speak to anyone else, said that she was it! Now I am left with a $550.00 repair bill that is the recall!

Nissan has still not called me and it has been a month! I received an email from 'Customer Service' saying that the transfer case/seals were not covered under the extended CVT warranty....well, that's not good enough for me! I created a Facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Complaints-about-Nis

Nissan has their own 'fluff' pages on Facebook but they blocked me after I put negative comments on the page regarding my transfer case issue. So, now there is a page to complain on....and I will make sure that Nissan gets a copy of every complaint registered on that page!!!!

My 2005 Nissan just went back to CarMax for the same tapping noise that seemed to happen during acceleration. The faster the car goes, the louder it got. I wish I had found this page before I bought this 1-1/2 years ago. It only has 67,000 miles on it. I know I have the extended transmission warranty from Nissan and I also have the MaxCare extended warranty I bought through CarMax. If the costs aren't covered between the two, that will be the end of my Nissan purchases. This one is my first. I typically prefer Chrysler products. Never had an issue with Chrysler. Guess I'll keep going with them in the future. I am so not looking forward to the call giving me the diagnostics. I'm actually kind of scared to get the news! If it's the transfer case, I'll be getting a new car and it won't be a Nissan.

2005murano 13 months ago

Hey all don't give up. After having my oil changed and tranny flushed, my Mo made a god awful noise. I brought it to the dealer and they automatically replaced the tranny. They called me and said that the tranny wasn't the problem but it was the transfer case and I would have to pay 1700.00 to fix it. They said it would of costed 5000.00 but nissan was going to pay some and the dealer would...I told them no way in hell I was going to pay anything after reading all the complaints online. So after an email to the dealer and talking with the GM he was able to get things rolling (The GM was going to butt heads with nissan)service manager just called and said the Mo would be ready tomorrow. I asked if everything would be taking care of under the warranty and he says "that's how it's looking"

So Don't take no for an answer fight tooth and nail if you must. We have to make Nissan own up to these faulty Transfer cases.

Nissan dealership Chicago 13 months ago

I don't think the CVT problem is a major one. However, if Nissan feels it as a huge problem then Nissan might take steps in the coming future.

2005murano 13 months ago

To the Nissan Dealership Chicago. You may think it isn't a major problem. But to us owners who are told that a new tranny will cost 6,000.00 That is a major problem. Then after they put the tranny in and then tell you that wasn't the problem it is the tranfer case and will cost another 5,000.00 That to is a MAJOR problem. The two units seem to be going in hand and hand. And Nissan should own up to it and replace them when they go. For a 30,000 vehical and up these tranny and tranfer cases should last over 100,000 miles.

I bought my 2003 Murano in Dec. of 2010 it has been great up until today. Driving home form work I find myself on the highway trying to take off at a stoplight with my gas padel all the way to the floorboard with no response. Then it takes off at high RPMs. It happens all the way home at everystop light. I almost got hit by on coming traffic. I get home and turn it off. Decide to test it out again and it drives great again. So I started to research if there was anyone else with this issue. I happen to find this website. I am calling the dealership in the morning, and I fear a will hear the same results. I ony paid 8,500 for it and the cost looks to be about 50% of that. I may end up cutting my cost and trading it in. I drive 30 mins on a busy highway to work and have children and can not take the risk.

We bought a 2003 SL AWD when it first came out, March of 2003. Been running fine for 140K miles. Yesterday we took it in for a routine service and were told that the transfer case was cracked and needed to be replaced: $3000. We had NOT run into the problems that others mentioned, so we hope the CVT is okay, but we don't know what's next. Of three things we are certain: we will complain loudly to EVERYONE at the dealership; we will complain up the Nissan ladder as far as possible; and we will not buy or recommend Nissan again unless Nissan makes good.

Barry 12 months ago

We bought a 2003 Murano with 72,000 miles on it 3 years ago and we love it. Last summer my son was driving it home on the interstate and there was a sudden decelleration as if he threw it into low gear on the while running at 70 mph. I took it to the dealer. They found nothing. 4 months later I was driving the murano and same thing except it almost threw me through the windshield it downshifted so hard. I took it to the dealer.....nothing! I left it with them to drive and the head mechanic drove it 100 miles during the week with no problems. We went 5 months with a problem every now and then but the car always worked itself out. This shift in acceleration up or down has become more frequent but never with any codes. The dealer told me without a code he cant diagnose anything. Today, I am waiting on my wife and daughter to come out of the store. As they come out and I approach them to pick them up, the car accelerates as I am trying to stop, the RPM's race and I have the brake to the floor. I have to throw the car into park to stop it. again, no code. Just as a I get home the car acts up again, totally loses power and I coast into my drive way with no power. This time I have these codes: slip, ABS, VDC off, and service engine soon. I turn the car off and it will not restart. its dead. Whats up with that. I love this car and it hates me.

I have an 07 Murano with 88k miles on it. CVT fluid was replaced at 45k. Now, while driving down the road, it starts to get sluggish. Then all of a sudden, POW, sound s like a peice of metal is hitting the undercarriage with each turn of the wheel. Luckily I was near a local shop and was able to pull in. Phone call today, transmission needed! Love the Nissan Murano, but after reading all of these post, I will never buy another Nissan. Decision to get it fixed or just trade it in as is and take the loss.

Unfortunately I did no advanced research on the Nissan Murano and now we are resting among the group of other upset Murano owners.

A month ago we purchased a used 2007 Murano SL AWD with 29,000 miles. After a week of driving it we made a moderately slow stop as we appraoched a red-lighted intersection. The vehicle surged forward as the brakes were being applied. We could feel the anti-lock brakes begin to pulse at the pedal. The usual quite transmission began to make shifting noises as it argued with an engine that was rising in RPM. With a loud and pronouced clunk and my head was thrust into the headrest restraint pad. The vehicle stopped just before impacting the rear of a car before us. This has happened twice, with repeat visits to the dealer for repairs. They say they find nothing wrong, codes are all fine etc. They even serviced the brakes no charge, but I know that is not the problem here!

But then 51 miles later my car was doing the same thing. I took it back and they said it was fine. 2 days ago it went haywire again so I drove it straight to the dealership at a maximum mph of 40. Thats all it would do in first gear. Left it there overnight only for them to tell me there is nothing wrong it. What the ****?? It wouldnt even restart when i left it there at 11:00pm that night. The dashboard was lit up like a Christmas tree with warning lights and the service manager tells me there is nothing wrong. I purchased my 2010 Murano one year ago and just started having the same problems with the car not moving when I step on the gas to pull out in traffic. I took it to the dealership the other day and they are currently replacing the valve body in the transmission. I'm hoping that this will fix the problem but from what I'm reading, I'm a little bummed that I decided to buy this car and get rid of my Toyota 4Runner which never had a problem.

I have a 2003 Murano that has the same transmission problem as mentioned in earlier posts. My problem has been going on for 3+ years, in and out of the shop. Each time they tell me is can't be the transmission because it would have died by now. I've had the throddle body cleaned twice, the transmission fluid replaced twice, spark plugs replaced and numerous sensors replaced. The problem is this...even though I complained as far back as January 2008, the transmission wasn't confirmed as the problem to my woes until I took it elsewhere this month and they confirmed that it is my transmission. The Nissan dealership is in agreement with my mechanic. Problem is, I'm now out of warranty, even though my initial complaints wer well within warranty. I have work invoices from January 2008 stating that I was concerned with stalls, hesitation and power surges on the highway. Nissan Canada, in reply to my concerns, says (without explaination) that my issues all along were not transmission related but now suddenly those same issues are my transmission. They will not honour the warrantly. Any suggestions?

Unless you love the car and want to spend several thousands to replace it, dump it. How about a class action lawsuit for all of the owners with identical problems, it is well documented.

LarryG 11 months ago

The thought had crossed my mind. The vehicle is worth about $8-10K now and a transmission will most likely be $4.5-6K so I'm thinking I just drive it until it stops. I have connections in the Canadian television media so i might take it there to hold Nissan accountable in the public opinion.

Lindberg 11 months ago

I am sad to say that I too have the problems described above. I feel less alone, but no less frustrated. I bought a 2003 Murano two months ago and immediately started having issues with it. Driving at 70 mph it will seem to down shift, with the RPM's shooting up. If someone had been too close behind, they would have rearended me. I took it to the Nissan dealer and they upgraded the computer system and literally days later it began doing the same thing. I have a small child and fear that I cannot even trust the vehicle at freeways speeds. I have an appointment to take it in again, but fear they will tell me that there is no error code and charge me for the diagnostic scan. Not sure what to do?

I have had my Mo for nearly 3 years and not had a problem. I love the car however last weekend it suddenly developed a flapping sound i thought it was a flat tyre !! Nope after sorting that out the noise was still there but louder finally after 20 miles it was undrivable and had to be recovered. now im told im looking at the thick end of a 4 grand bill for a transfer box - bugger - I have had 5 nissans to date and never had a problem I still have a 1980 patrol but I wont be buying another Nissan after this

Fadi 10 months ago

Hello Everyone. Had the loss of power on the highway for a while now and couldn't figure out why. No engine light or other warning lights come on whatsoever! Thought it was a sensor, fuel injector problem, had the fuel pump replaced before etc. Until the consistent banging happend and thought it was a tire scenario like others on this forum. Definitely my transfer case is shot as per my mechanic. I have a 2003 with 153,000kms. What a piece of junk. I will never buy another Nissan again. If this was a CRV, this would have never ever happened.

Really? I honestly thought Nissan was one of the best cars to own until I owned a Murano! I have the same problem everyone is complaining about except that mine broke down with three little kids on a vacation. This would not have happened if nissan had done what it is suppose to do, Recall! What about a class action to?

I feel bad for the people that are stuck with these vehicles.

my 2004 murano is the 3rd nissan i've owned. i've never had a major issue until now. very similar to what everyone else is experiencing..... no power whatsoever from a stop, then will jerk forward violently, however this problem comes and goes and obviously is never present when nissan is checking it out. just recently, i started hearing a thumping/flapping noise coming from the front of the car. this noise got louder and the car began shaking. i took it to nissan and they told me i need a new front differential at $4000.00. i mean, c'mon, lets get real. the car has 100k miles on it. it's probably not even worth 10 grand and i have to put 40% of it's value back into it? not to mention i just put brand new control arms, an intake solenoid, and a new steering rack on it over the past 3 months, which cost me another 3 thousand dollars? what is wrong with these things? if i would have known that nissan teamed up with fisher-price to build these muranos, i never would have bought one!!!

Sandy 9 months ago

I am sick to my stomach reading these reviews. We have an '04 MO and recently the AWD and SES light came on. I go to the Dealer and they say,it is the AWD control unit at $600. So I buy and they put it in then come back and tell me it is the Rear coupling - which I have not replaced because that is another $1700. I honestly do not trust the dealerships and now I am concerned it is the transfer case. What am I looking at for cost there???

murano2005 9 months ago

Sandie go directly to the Gengeral manager, or right to the owner of the Dealer. Tell them that their machanics do not know what they are doing. They tried that crap with me saying my tranny was bad first. They did replace that under the warranty, But then said that wasn't the problem and then told me it was the differental and would cost a few thousand more. I told them to hold all repairs and I was not going to pay a dime for their imcompantance. I contacted the GM of my dealler, Thank goodness he was able to resolve. But Don't pay anything more for something they can not fix the first time around. No Dealler should be guessing at what part to fix and exspect the customer to just pay untill the problem is fixed.

My 2003 Murano required CVT replaced at 55K and 95K, luckily 1st was in original warranty and 2nd reimbursed by extended warranty. My wife just totaled it...yeah!

Anna 9 months ago

2006 Nissan Murano, we had to replace the transmission at 70,000 miles, along with 2 wheel bearings and now we're told it needs a new transfer case. Within 2 months this car has cost us $10,000 in repairs not to mention we haven't been able to drive it in 2 months with having to space out repairs financially....oh but we still get to pay the car payment every month!!

Scraps 9 months ago

2006 Murano, original owner, has been serviced regularly as required, starting experiencing lack of power on acceleration then would surge forward. Just went back to dealer for 2nd time, they could not duplicate problem or get an error code, yet I need hub bearings ($825) and let's not forget - you have a cracked transfer case. I will call the GM and whoever else I have to - they can diagnose the major issue CVT, yet expect me to keep driving it putting myself and family in danger??

Scraps 9 months ago

Meant to say CAN'T diagnose CVT issue (which it is) so they can't fix it as it wouldn't be covered under warranty and the cracked transfer case is due to driving in the salt and sand (?) - not even in an area forthose and the transfer case isn't covered by warranty - I'm sorry, isn't that part of the transmission???????

itzel in Austin TX 9 months ago

I am having the same transmission issues with my 2008 Nissan Rogue. And, I need some ideas on what the malfunction might be now because Nissan replaced the cvt 9 days ago -after I took it in because it was making a sound at 50mph. They took 3 wks to replace it and when I drove it home it was fine. I parked it for 4 days while I was out of town and when I returned it wouldn't break 20 mph even when floored and there was a scraping noise. It was towed back, they said the noise was from brakes rusting over the 4 days and that it would burn off and it ran fine for them. I took it to brakes plus, they said there was a metal scrap caught between the disc, they removed it at no cost. The brakes, pads, lines, fluid, etc., were found to be in fine working order. The car drove fine for for 5 more days then the power loss issue happened again while turning left at an intersection. It scared the crap out of me. I was flooring the pedal and pumping it and I only crawled at 5mph while fearing that the protective green arrow would disappear and I would get t-boned. I kept gunning it and then it started to accelerate. I drove it home about 40mph on the access roads, parked it and the next morning when I backed it out of my driveway to place it on the street for towing....it worked fine. No issues. So, I decided I would wait until it was happening, and then I would take it in for an immediate test drive. So, next day, the power surge and loss began again, so I drove it to Nissan. The service agent drives it, with me in the car and it's definately sluggish. He got the rpms up to 7-8k and the car would not advance from 35 to 40mph. Finally, I felt like I was able to show him the malfunction. So, he drops me off for 5-10 minutes while he goes with the mechanic for a ride and maybe the garage (I couldn't see because I was in a lounge area) and when he returns he says "well, it's driving fine and it's not pulling up any codes. I can't do anything if it doesn't pull codes." Then, he adds that "It's perfectly normal for a car to redline." What?????? Are you kidding me???? Does Nissan the manufacturer and the liable party want you to not keep and look at my transmission after it malfunctions 3 times in a 9 day period? It's still under the warranty they gave me 9 days ago. I left it there and told him to let it sit until the late morning or early afternoon at which time it should have issues because that's the trend. But what if it doesn't? This car ran great for 65k miles even with the burned transmission fluid -which they cited as the cause for the warranty replacement. Can anyone make any suggestions because I'm sure I'm not the only one. Also, it seems I have to tell him what to look for -as if he didn't already know or maybe isn't authorized to recognize and repair. I drive 50-100 miles/day as part of my job as a healthcare provider, so I can't afford to have a car not work or worse get me injured in an accident because then I really can't work. Thanks in advance. Also, if Nissan monitors this site please feel free to contact me. I have purchased 2 new Nissans in my short life and would continue to give you my business, but not if this matter is not appropriately resolved.

I have a 2004 Nissan Murano. Bought it in 2007 with 14000 miles on it. My dream car after having 2 major back operations it allowed me the comfort I required.

5 months later the transmission went at 17438 miles. Was still under warranty. Now at 40000 miles I had to have it towed 200km for 550.00 dollars to a nissan dealer and they stated that the transfer case is the problem!!! Nissan wanted 3900 plus tax to fix it! I had it towed out of there and had it repaired elsewhere. No way I am giving Nissan another dime for that car. So disapointed with Nissan I have been giving the run around like crazy!! They do not stand behind there vehicals!! Now I have pain in my back and ass thanks to Nissan

I bought a used 2004 Murano in 2007 with $32,000 miles on it. December 2009, Nissan put a new CVT transmission in it. Counted my self very lucky and hoped I now had a great car. This August I heard a noise, like rocks were rattling under the hood or front wheel. I drove it to a local mechanic, because he was very close, and I was really afraid to drive. He thought it was the transmission, so I drove it to Nissan dealer. They told me the transfer case, not covered under warranty and would cost $3,000. I am having it repaired, elsewhere, and crossing my fingers. Love my Murano, but it will be a trade in soon. These post have helped me make that descision.

Perrya, reading thru this massive list of complaints, are these problems all related just to a Murano alone, or is the main component, the Murano AWD and CVT transmission? And why does Nissan tell you the CVT transmission and the transfer case are not related in any way? Should they not be covered together under a warranty?

perrya profile image

perrya Hub Author 8 months ago

As far as I know, Murano and CVT only, and Nissan must know about the issue and that might explain why it is not covered.

I have a 04 murano. I bought it 2008. It has seemed to leak what I thought was oil on the garage floor since we bought it but when checked there was no leak. Just wanted you to know that this does not just happen to Nissan but also Dodge. Found this webpage when looking for problems with CVT transmissions. Found out that JATCO makes the CVT Transmission and that Nissan owns JATCO. And that they both know that there are problems with this CVT Transmission and it sounds like that neither of them will step up and cover the cost for these problems. Also that Dodge warranty is 3yr/35,0000, 100,000 on Trans but only to original owner.

We purchased a 2008 Dodge Caliber for our son 11-08(2nd owner) it had 16000 miles and now has 32,000 miles. In July we started to have loss of power, took it in and paid $325 for a loose wire. On 8-9-11 took it back to Dodge for same problem. They wanted $150. to look at car. Next day another $150. to look some more because they could not find out what the problem was. The car is not drivable but they don't know what is wrong with it. Then it is a Transmission module $425. Takes 2 weeks to get part- the car still does not work. Wanted another $300 to test new module in our car with another car and put that module in our car. We told them we should not have to pay for trial & error. Filed a case with Dodge. They approved the test on them. Module was good - car still does not work and the Tech says he does not know what is wrong. Car Dealer was told to replace at Dodge cost. They are to replace: Valve Body and Wiring Harness to the Transmisssion. The dealer told us that it was about $1500 in parts alone and that they have never done this before, did not know how to do this, and did not know if they had the tools to complete the job. Dodge says that if this does not work they will not be assisting us in any more issues. We found out on 9-7-11 that the Valve Body was on back order and would not be available until 9-20-11. Now I am out over $1000, Have a car that does not run, with out a car for 6-8 weeks, a Dodge Tech that does not know how to fix the car, and not a lot of confidence that it will be fixed. I think that JATCO (Nissan & Dodge) should step up and fix these problems that they created.

Hi, my name is Aaron, and I own a Murano...

Bought an '04 Murano in 2009. Had 110k miles on it, and was relatively trouble free until yesterday. My pregnant wife was driving it when the tell-tale acceleration jerking symptoms appeared. This morning I decided to drive it around the block to check it out. I got out into the middle of the street, put it in gear... and nothing. RPMs went up, and I went no where. Luckily reverse still kind of worked, and I was able to get to the curb. Towed it to the dealer, and just like everyone else, I will be paying for a new transmission... and then trade it in. I was told by the salesman that without the transmission, it was worth $1k as a trade in, so I'm going to fix it to hopefully get my money back in the trade-in value. I wish I wold have seen this before I bought it.

Hi Guys, I am from the UK and bought a Murano 05 about 6 months ago. The CVT transmission has gone and Nissan Dealership have just quoted £5245 to strip it find the problem and rebuild it! I have spoken to Nissan GB regarding the warranty extension on NissanAssist to cover 120k miles/10 years as only have 90k on the clock and they have just informed me that it only covered North America despite the vehicle being built in the same factory with the same components etc for the UK market. I found this unbelievable given as it should be a global warranty extension if it is the same components!! I am now just starting legal proceedings against them as if they have extended it for America then this should also be the case for the UK market if it was the same vehicle manufacturered exactly the same. If anyone has any suggestions or experience of going down this route that would help. Thanks

I had the same problem with my transmission. I have a 2003 Murano and I was coming from Atlanta when my car slowed down on me, I did make it home, which is Montgomery, Al. It took two weeks before I was straightened out. Last October, my car would just stop, I mean shutdown completely-after three visits to the service dept.-my husband suggested they check the battery cable connector. They did replace it,that was last October, now it is September and I have the same problem again. It is quite dangerous and frustrating to be on the road and your car just shuts down. Has anyone experienced this same problem? If so, what was the outcome? Nissan clsaims they have master mechanics, but they can't tell me what is wrong with my car. I really like my car, but I don't want to die in it. Thank you for your response.

When the vehicle fail the accelerator does'nt respond what happen when you move to P o Neutral position? in my case the effect is allmost the same and nothing change... I would like to see why is the CTV should on Parking on Neutral?

I honestly was going to pay the $6500 to have it fixed because I wanted to keep my car that badly but after seeing that it is somewhat pointless, I am changing my mind. Can't we band together to have Nissan listen to us? I called the corporate office in hopes that they would help but NO LUCK. I thought this problem was unique to me but I clearly see its not. @Aaron your humour is right - the Murano is driving its owners into therapy!

Ok my turn... Hi, I've been through this whole failed CVT thing with my Nissan Altima 2002 (ok, stay withme now... :-) Sweet car, great movement, I just loved it, then it burnt a hole in my pocket. At least 3 times it put me at risk by failing on the highway; not to mention putting pressure at my job when it failed on the way to work one other morning. So what did I do? I decided to sell and get a used 2003 Murano this weekend. I guess I'm lucky cos I got to see this blog just in time while researching the 2003 Murano. Talk about double jeopardy!! I was about picking it up this weekend! Thanks everyone, with what I now know, there's no way I'm going anywhere near the Murano. Too bad, such a nice looking car, just waiting to drive you up the wall. The big disgrace is that Nissan offered a warranty without even talking about how they plan to to fix this problem in future editions. They conveniently ignored the fact that a sudden deceleration on the highway could mean a terrible accident and a failed trans late at night on a lonely road could get someone robbed - or worse. For me, no more Nissans (especially the ones with a CVT trans) - no chance.

Rachel Young 7 months ago

I also have a 2004 Murano; It randomly loses acceleration with no warning then catches after flooring the gas. I am not the origianl owner bought car at 34K miles. The problems started at 68K miles. So it's congruent with the discription mentioned. My dad, being a mechanic, said it felt like the transmission...he obviously was correct.

Chris 7 months ago

I bought an '07 with 12k miles for my wife in '08 from Enterprize Rental Car. It was immaculate and in really great shape. The car now has 40k+ miles, no complaints except high road noise level (anybody know of a quiet brand of tire?). The tell-tale CVT failure started only about 2mos ago. She took the car to a trusted local Nissan dealer in Berkeley who said the 'slip ratio' was jumping from 15 to 127 caused by a bad pressure sensor in the CVT. They said repairs would be under warranty, but because they weren't an 'Authorized' dealer (their building was too small?!) they couldn't perform a warranty repair. We were sent to an authorized dealer and long story short: A new transmission and differential seal at no cost. The car is a rocket now: we didn't realize the CVT had probably been failing for a long time, but the noticeable symptoms hadn't cropped-up till recently.

Robert 6 months ago

Hi everyone, I also owned an MO 2008 outside US. A brand new from Nissan's dealer. The problem appeared just in the first service of warrany on 1000miles !! I was really surprised of a new vehicle for such a problem. CVT transmission replaced entirely under warranty (I saw an invoice of $5k).

I thought it was an accident or any problem caused by personnel during service. But a second time on 15Kmiles the same disaster. Car started jerking while I intented to park it in a lot with a slight slip. I was unable to mount it and my friends repproached me for a useless AWD. But I felt that it was the same problem and CVT has failed as the first.

So the same scenario and replaced under warranty. Finally I feared having the same problem by the end of warranty therefore I sold it quickly..

I am surprised that it was an epidemy for so many cases and glad of having got rid of it!

@Jhon CR : in fact when the CVT fails vehicle is unable to accelarate even if you push the accelerator in other word engine doesn't rev up more than 1000 or 1500rpm. The worst is when you reach a very slight hill (my own case) and you risk to stop completely or even to go back! Very dangerous if you are on a road or a highway and other cars are behind you.

As a temporary solution, you need to park it in a corner and turn the engine off for at least half an hour until the CVT fluid cools down. Then start it up and try to accelerate as much as possible. Because just after a while it will come back and you will not be able to rev up anymore! Otherwise you have to tow it..

As many friends mentioned, even Nissan knows this problem! Because I found this syptoms in user's manual of the new Murano : http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.com/owners-manua

In section "5-12 Starting and driving"/DRIVING THE VEHICLE" CVT part you can see these notices:

HIGH FLUID TEMPERATURE protection mode

This transmission has a high fluid temperature protection mode. If the fluid temperature becomes too high (for example, when climbing steep grades in high temperature with heavy loads, such as when towing a trailer), engine

power and, under some conditions [this is the real case! no reason], vehicle speed will be decreased automatically to reduce the chance of transmission damage. Vehicle speed can be controlled with the accelerator pedal, but the engine and vehicle speed may be limited.

FAIL-SAFE

If the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions, such as excessive wheel spinning and subsequent hard braking, the fail-safe system may be activated. The MIL may illuminate to indicate the fail-safe mode is activated. (See “Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)” in the “2. Instruments and controls” section.) This will occur even

if all electrical circuits are functioning properly. In this case, place the ignition switch in the OFF position and wait for 10 seconds [big lie, you need about an hour]. Then place the ignition switch back in the ON position. The vehicle should return to its normal operating condition [but indeed doesn't return]. If it does not return to its normal operating condition, have a NISSAN dealer check the transmission and repair if necessary.

And then this WARNING:

When the high fluid temperature protection mode or fail-safe operation occurs, vehicle speed may be gradually reduced. The reduced speed may be lower than other traffic, which could increase the chance of a collision. Be especially careful when driving. If necessary, pull to the side of the road at a safe place and allow the transmission to return to normal operation, or have it repaired if necessary.

So you can see that all those syptoms have been seen by themselves and they are conscious about them. This is a big failure not a special case or warning which is due to transmission system design.

well, plan to to keep the car no longer than the warranty to be safe. That warranty is similar to the 76-77 vega for its engine which had serious problems at 50K until Chevy modified it. Nissan should just fix whatever the problem is.

I only read a few accounts here but they are all sounding the same. People like me across the country having MAJOR ISSUES with their Muranos, and Nissan being unwilling in any assistance or accountability with their product. UNTIL SOMEONE DIES IN AN ACCIDENT. Well, it wont be me, because I will take a financial loss before I lose my life in that piece of s**t. Words cannot express how infuriated I am with this car. I HAVE FIXED OR REPLACED EVERYTHING IN THIS CAR with the TRANSFER CASE now being this issue at hand. I have paid more in fixing this car than I have on the car note.

FOR ALL OF YOU THINKING THAT YOUR CVT IS THE EXCEPTION TO THE RULE, DREAM ON!!!

Nissan is doubling the warranty on the CVT YET claiming ridiculous exceptions STILL when you bring yours in for fixing.

Something has to give. If I have to get a lawyer on all of our behalfs, I will. If we have to stand in front of the local dealer's lot and OCCUPY NISSAN, I am all for it. If we weren't the typical hard working middle class citizen in search of a decent car, we wouldve probably went for a pricier alternate. I wanted a FX35 but settled for a Murano. Biggest mistake I ever made.

I have an 07' Murano bought new. It has 64,000 miles on it. I have had no problems with it except for the tire sensors leaking air which all had to be replaced. However this Saturday night driving home from the Catskills in heavy traffic I came to a stop and when I went to accelerate the rpm went up but the car would'nt move forward. I immediatly put it in park and then down in drive again. Nothing! Accelarated Rpm's went up but it would not move. Then all of a sudden it took off. I've booked it in this evening With the Nissan dealer where we bought it, to be checked out, and after reading this I am dreading the experience.

I actually put a website together specifically for the Nissan CVT problem. Though I will address future CVT issues, this post focuses on the 2007-2011 Nissan Altima CVT's where people experience what Nissan deems "slight hesitations / surges" which is complete BS. What I experience I would never categorize as "slight" in any way, shape, or form...and would never consider ANY hesitation whatsoever as "normal" or within "design specifications" especially for a car that is 3 years old, let alone 1 year old like a 2011.

If any of you experience hesitations/jerks/surges in your 2007 through 2011 Nissan Altima's...leave a comment here: http://www.nissan-cvt-problems.com/2007-2011-nissa

thanks!

Well I have a brand new 2011 Murano and this just happened to me 20 minutes ago. I was at a red light went to accelerate and nothing happened except a clunk in the front end and then finally it took off. The whole way home the accelerator was hesitating big time. Going to dealer in the morning can't wait to get the run around. Not to mention last week half of my stereo screen went black.

Subaru has notified NHTSA about a defect in certain model year 2010 Subaru Tribeca passenger cars manufactured from September 4, 2009 through March 8, 2010. The door latch cables located inside the vehicle's driver and front passenger doors were improperly positioned during production. As a result, a cable can catch in the door glass regulator when a window is opened or closed. Should that occur, it may unlatch the door, causing it to come open unexpectedly when raising or lowering the window. If a door were to unlatch, it could open suddenly and without warning, creating a risk that an occupant could be ejected, as well as a risk that the driver may become distracted, leading to a crash. This condition may also result in the failure of a door latch to operate, in which case occupants would be unable to open the door to exit the vehicle. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about March 19, 2010. 10V-108.

I bought my 2003 Murano 4 years ago with 66,000K and the car ran fine until Thanksgiving Night when the transmission aparently went out. (Now it has 142,000k) 2 years ago I took the SUV in for the CVT recall and told them about the hesistation when you press on the gas petal as well but they said nothing was wrong. From then it occassional hesistated and I took it back to the Nissan dealer and they said they could not found a problem. After reading everyone's posts, it's definitely an issue Nissan needs to fix and fix fast. People are losing money and God forbid, maybe a lives. I am calling Nission Consumers Service. Just pray that they do something about this issue.

2004 -142k awd Murano - at times it wants to stall at the light. I stopped driving it after a mechanic and dealer said it was the transmission about to go bad - I was considering having it replaced until I read the cost from $3 to $7 depending if it was the transmission valve assembly or the transmission it self. I parked the car since and hope it's well-be-haved when I take it to the dealer for a trade in on a VW-Passat. I have spent more money fixing than it's worth keeping. So sad because I really enjoyed this car and was even considering buying a used transmission and replacing it but after reading all of the Murano Problems - they have been some problem cars. Will never buy Nissan again.

catgrabber 5 months ago

Hi Ladies and fellow 07 Nissan Murano owners! Well I just found out about the (Achilles Heel) of the Nissan Murano I purchased a few years ago. First of all I like the car except the blower never worked very well. This year (2011) it completely quit, of cores its out of warranty. I contacted the dealership where I bought it and dang, after they told me what it cost to fix it I said to myself, O MY GOD! They said they had problems with several of them. I said again to myself, WELL CRAP!

Well tell ya what; I was in the automotive industry for a long time. I worked for JCI just over 12 years in the seating division. You really can’t mess up a car seat much but we did!! The next thing I did, I was employed by Futaba at a pre-assembly plant for Toyota for about 8 years. I was a Resident Quality Engineer at the Princeton Indiana Toyota plant. That’s a glorified name for a factory quality rep. What I did was made repairs and sorted parts. And not to forget to mention caught a lot of h—l. Never, really had a good day at that job. Not once was I asked to look at something that was correct. HAHA.. Never, made much money either. I couldn’t buy a Toyota on my pay alone, but my wife also was employed at a pre-assembly plant for Toyota. So to gather we could. I was sort of upset about the amount of money we made and the way we were treated I decided to buy a Nissan, and I did. That showed em.

So I will tell ya what I did to my Murano. I purchased a GM blower motor that turns the same direction as the one in my car, cores it wouldn’t bolt up so I had to make a sheet metal retrofit. Then I wired in a on & off switch and a GM dimmer switch to slow the fan velocity, I taped in to the auxiliary 12 volt port, the place ya use to charge your cell phone, and got the power for the fan. Ya have to use a larger amp fuse because the standard 15 amp fuse can’t take the load. So far, it works and I aint smelled smoke YET?

The price is about 60ty bucks. I checked a few places on the “AC Amplifier Relay” thing and it’s around 400 bucks plus labor. WOW!!!! And I gota ask?? how long will it WORK??? My fan works ANY TIME I WANT IT TOO!!! All the other AC and heat stuff works just fine.

OH one other thing, I could tell ya some horror stories about the Toyota but Ill save that for later…

WammBamm 5 months ago

"Nissan has extended warranty for 10 years/200,000KM. Previous repairs costs are reimbursed."

The extended warranty is NOT in effect for models after 2010. And, according to numerous Murano owners all over the WWW, the warranty has huge holes in it.

catgrabber 5 months ago

Hi again, Well Mr. Bam I got to agree with ya. As I previously noted I have been an automotive industry employ for a bunch of years.. I’m not any more because I raised questions. If I didn’t get the response I was trying to receive I went higher up. I wasn’t a whistle blower but I just wanted to make a good product. I wanted to do my best, Because that’s what I want from my fellow man, I wanted to make parts that lined up and fitted up. I wanted to make parts to last. Now for me I spent 36 thousand big ones on my Murano. And that was on a 20 thousand per year job. So the numbers don’t add up, do they?

After spending that much money I got to ask? Will I be able to use it tomorrow?? What If I had an emergency, should I call an Nissan official and ask if they could come help me, BECAUSE MINE WONT WORK!!!

I was in the Toyota assembly plant for about 3 years. The people on the lines would show me how things lined up. We made or assembled close to 400 Sienna Minnie Vans in 8 hours, 1 in every 72 seconds.

I have been in every area of the auto Industry. The press area, secondary press area. welding, both arc and spot-weld, Logistics and most of all QUALITY.

I can drive into a manufacturing plant and tell ya the quality of the product their building and the quality of the employees, just by looking at the way they park their cars in the parking lot!

I have always said, even out loud!!! if a manufacturing process is running balls out with very few quality issues, its MANAGEMENT FAULT, if not IT’S MANAGEMENT FAULT!!!!

For some reason I wasn’t liked very well, respected but not liked very well.

So well, shoot, if I have been out of line, just tell me ya really don’t have to yell at me. The thing is we got a problem with Nissan and just about every other maker and the problem is them chasing the NUMBER ONE SPOT their forgetting the ones that like and love their products.

An old man who was my neighbor where I grew up, always said, give em enough rope and theyol hang their self…………………

I'll never buy Nissan again. Bought a 1996 pickup and evertything was good except the transmission which conked out at around 65K. Bought a 2003 Murano used and the transmission had problems immediately. It had 63K miles on it and, unknown to me because the dealer didn't say anything, had just had the transmission replaced. The replacement didn't work either, but fortunately for me I was still withing the 6k warranty that the local dealer provided. Nissan has horrible transmissions and this particular problem added a lot of unnecessary stress. Stay away.

I have owned my 2003 Murano since 2005. I have driven it on Pennsylvania roads which are thw worst in the nation. I have driven in 2 feet of snow, in 20 below weather, driven on several 10 hour trips and even took it on the beach via dirt roads and have NEVER had a single problem. Either 1) there was a specific time frame where perhaps some employees were drunk on the job building there or 2) you all drive like morons.

Shoulda bought a Subaru. Nissan needs to stick to rwd sports cars instead of the awd market.

Allen Arndt 4 months ago

I have a 2003 Murano that's been went 124,00o without any problems. My compliant is the high cost of maintenance at the dealer. I had a little leak in the transfer case, but they fixed with no charge. I have the transmission serviced at the dealer and it cost $120 not $600 as I read in other reports. I think the problem people are having is using the AWD on dry roads. I think this happens because the AWD switch placement is at the front of the center console and can be easily actuated when reaching for article being stored on the self on the front of the console. The accidental actuation of the AWD switch and driving for extended periods in AWD mode can do serious damage. I have made a AWD switch guard to prevent unintended actuation. I add that I have been situations that stressed the drive line to max. I believe that a the transmission design is good, but the safety factor is could be marginal. The metal belt and sigments the contact the primary and secondary drive wheels need proper Nissan oil. Oil should check at least at every oil change.

I have a 2011 Nissan Sentra which had a total transmission breakdown at 15,000 miles. Before it broke down, it repeatedly suddenly accelerated and then decelerated on the highway. The new replaced transmission jerks when shifting from P to R, or to D. Apparently, Nissan has serious problems with the CVT transmission.

michinstant 4 months ago

Thanks--as this was helpful. My Manifold may be going on my 2003Murano. On a cold start the car smells like exhaust. It goes away after a while....so I am thinking manifold. I already tested the exhaust and there are no leaks.

Frustrating...just had new struts and tie rod and the coolant pipes on both sides replaced. I hate to give up after over 2K in repairs this past year.

But replacing the manifold will bring me over the edge....My Murano is not as robust as my 2003 Nissan NX...

Two time owner 4 months ago

Give me a break! Have owned two Muranos since 2003 and haven’t had a single problem with either of them. Not one problem with any system on the cars, period. I sit at work and listen to people complain about all the trouble they have with their cars. If the original poster of this shock article would have done ANY research, he would have quickly discovered that the CVT has a 120,000 mile warranty (check to see what it is on your crappy union built car) and that it is in most Nissan vehicles. If you were to look at the numbers correctly, you would see that given the total number or Nissans on the road with CVT vs. the failure rate, it is less than 1%. Depending who you talk to, most manufactures have a 1.5-2% failure rate in the first 5 years. Do the research! I will give you that it cost more to repair. But look at anything you buy in life. If you buy cheap garbage, it is cheap to fix. Calculate how much money you save with the extra MPG and figure that into your repair cost. Not having to do any repairs, I don’t know this for sure, but, with gas in my area always $4 or more a gallon, I bet the net result is that the transmission almost pays for itself.

The whole purpose of this site is to play on the fears of the public so that he can make money off the advertising. In any pathetic business model, use fear to generate profits. Why is he referencing the Murano and not all other Nissan vehicles with CVT? Because it does better with search results. Most people search for a specific vehicle they may be purchasing, not the brand. If he only talked about the Nissan CVT, his profits would tank. If he was truly concerned about the problem, there would be no ads and he would not delete positive posts like this one. When will society stand up to the greed driven, fear mongers instead of rolling over and accepting everything these people say.

Luck is an issue. Another car with spotty issues is the 05-9 VW Jetta with DSG tranny. Some buyers had the car for only 10K miles and it went out, after 50000 had done this, VW recalled it and extended the warranty to 100K miles. Others have the car with 175K miles and never had a problem with it.

MJS 3 months ago

My 2003 Murano with only 6zzzzk miles on the ticker was leaking oil and transfer case fluid all over the place. Could smell the burning while driving. Took it to the dealer.

They first told me that the leak was because I didn't have the dipstick placed back properly, which was total crap. I've changed oil in every car I've ever had. Never ever left a dipstick out...So, I tell them to keep it overnight and put some cardboard under it. Yep, it was leaking from the oil filter case. They charge me $295...(a) to clean the bottom of engine to see where the friggin oil is coming from and then to replace the filter case gasket (a part that should never ever need to be replaced in any car).

Then they tell me that the transfer case is also leaking and that it would be $1200 to replace the seals (yet another thing that should never ever have to be replaced). The CRV extended warranty doesn't cover a transfer case problem. If it blows on the road, it's a serious hazard.

I call NNA and they basically tell me to pound sand..too bad for you. We won't help you. You're car is 9 years old and stuff happens. I ask for a supervisor, they give me a case number. Then every 3 or four days, they call me back at around 7PM (hoping I won't answer for sure). I call and leave a message telling them to call me on my cell between 8 and 5 EST. They never answered the phone and again called after 6PM. What crap customer disservice.

Nissan is hiding this problem and charging customers thousands and thousands of $$$ to either replace TC seals or entire TC's (at about $4k each). It's a design defect. I went to the NHTSA website and saw at least 100 complaints. No action by Nissan or the NHTSA.

Nissan won't do the right thing because it would cost them millions. These cars are dangerous. Will it take someone getting killed before someone notices and does something????

I will never own another Nissan and I will tell everyone that asks to never touch the brand. No customer service and nasty response.

Traded the damn thing as soon as I possibly could because the TC could have blown at any time with my wife and 5 year old in it. They could have been hurt.

And, if the TC blew, the car would be worthless.

Got my 8k trade and went to a Honda immediately.

The Murano is a dangerous vehicle, not only because of the CVT, but also because of the transfer case.

Again folks, never ever touch a Nissan. They're not engineered and the build quality sucks. Go with any other brand and you'll get a better result.

That's just my humble opinion, but it seems to be shared by thousands of other poor Murano owners that have no recourse.

If you buy a Nissan...good luck to you because you're going to need it no matter how well you maintain it.

Mario 3 months ago

My 2006 Murano has the same issue Transfer Case Crack! the AWD light flashes after 10 min of driving. Took it to dealer in Akron Ohio, he changed the Axle, the Hub and ABS Speed sensor. $1500 later, the warning light AWD is still blinking. Now the service dept is saying the Transfer Case is cracked and God knows how much to fix it.

NISSAN, wake up and help your customers. No more Nissan for me, my family, and my friends.

That is a promise.

MJS 3 months ago

Yep, the problem isn't just with 03 and 04 Muranos...all of them even to this day still have the same transfer case design flaw. You buy a new one, you do so at your own peril. The car is unsafe. BTW, it's about $4000 to replace the transfer case, which is not covered under the extended CVT warranty. Nissan North America WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR YOU.

Lou 3 months ago

So I bought my 04' Nissan Murano about a year ago and I just paid a little over $3,000 to get the transfer case fixed. Lets say I'm not too happy with it because its now making other noises that might be related to that problem. This is going to be the LAST time I ever buy a Nissan. I'm sorry but I'm thinking of trading it in for a Honda. I own a Honda Accord for years and never had this big of an issue before!!!!!

2004 Nissan murano purchased brand new. Paid for Nissan platinum warranty and thankfully I did. We are now on our third cvt transmission. When approached the techs at Nissan laugh it off like they have no idea why it's happening. Our platinum warranty is now expired and the only recourse we have is the extended 10 yr 120000 cvt transmission warranty. Our murano just turned 115,000 and low and behold Began leaking what appeared to be trans fluid. My wife and I were thankful for the extended cvt warranty until we took it in to Nissan to be repaired. We were told the seal between the trans and transfercase was faulty and would not be covered under the cvt warranty. Repair cost $1400. This is a seal connected to the cvt trans that has been replaced THREE times! The tech said Nissan does not require them to replace said seal with a trans replacement. I tried every avenue of communication with Nissan to try and resolve this issue. I was told my only recourse is to write Nissan a letter. A letter! After all my wife and I have been through with this car and our Nissan loyalty, this is how we are treated. I praised the murano, my mother and good friend bought a murano. My good friends transfer case cracked a month ago because of this seal at a repaire cost of $2000 (not by Nissan service crooks). My mother is now in the process of dumping her murano for fear of this happening to her. For anyone who has posted and those who read these posts, tell everyone you know not to by a Nissan. It's not about the cvt trans anymore it's about customer service and satisfaction. Nissan does not care, they have made that apparent.

Andyc 2 months ago

A lot of you guys have posted a problem where the Murano pulls away slowly from stand still and then shoots forward. This is probably not a CVT transmission fault

When this happens turn off the car and re-start - I bet it fixes it.

Also when it happens take it out of gear and try and rev the car. You will notice that it still will not rev freely therefore it cannot be anything to do with the transmission if you are not in gear

Anon 2 months ago

Maybe, like Toyota, nothing was done because there WAS no problem as proven by exhaustive tests by NASA.

But by all means continue to put that lie out there.

I'm sure we'll hear nothing about Chevy Volts spontaneous combustion problem though.

woow! i"m terrified. just got a Murano 05, only to read all these comments. kinda thinking the slow pull and sudden shoot has to do with fail safe system to protect the CVT gear during increased temperature as indicated in the manual(pg. starting and driving 5-15). I have experienced this, pulled aside and disengaged the gear and still experienced a slow rev as highlighted by Andy c above. i was thinking the fail safe stuff is the reason for that. I know you guys feel there should be a recall but if you can't get one then you are still stuck with a car with problems. I recently had the slow pull away problem that the garage i bought the car from refused to acknowledge.

I read all about it on the forums and asked my mechanic to clean the throttle body - problem did not occur for two weeks. not saying this is all that needs to be done but would suggest this as the first fix

My Mechanic also pointed out to me that the Murano CVT should have it's oil changed - i was also keen to do this to make sure the cvt was not sending a messsage to the engine management which was causing the throttle problem

i bought the necessary Nissan NS-2 oil - very expensive and asked the mechanic to go ahead

He saved some of the old oil to show me when I collected the car - it was red in colour so obvioulsy not the NS-2 Nissan oil even though both previous services had been carried out by Nissan dealers

charge you for the proper stuff and put in the cheap stuff.

have now been running the car for two weeks after the gearbox oil change and still no throttle problems so hopefully one of the fixes have cured the problem

I am in the UK but price for both fixes was £160 labour (4 hours) + £115 for gear oil

ps the gear oil that came out of the CVT was very dirty and carried many particles of grit etc.

The CVT and VW DSG trannys have one thing in common-sensitivity to the correct oil to use and miles. The DSG must be changed every 40K, however, dealers wait until 80K, depite what the manual states. The DSG must use specific oil.

What should I buy instead?

...

Just kidding. I know you are going to mention Subaru for the 15th time. :o)

My 2003 Mierdano just had its transmission failed for the 4th time, not the same transmission, its fourth transmission.

SECOND time the radiator needs replacement as it failed and let CVT oil mix with coolant. SIlently, Nissan has revised te radiator and now it is a new part number.

Has anyone here has had the radiator failed with the CVT? One theory of mine is that radiator failure will lead to loss of CVT oil and oil pressure, letting coolant into the CVT and damaging it. NISSAN will blame CVT failure on the out-of-warranty radiator to avoid fixing the CVT under the extended warranty program... The oil pump is part of the transmission and both can be technically considered part of the same system as a transmission cannot operate without its oil cooler. What are your thoughts on being the transmission the part that actually damages the radiator and NOT the other way arround?

i don't know. Subies are great but I switched for better MPG bought a VW jetta diesel (TDI). Now, that tranny fails if the sensor fails causing the wrong info to be sent to DSG computer. This causes odd things in shifting or a complete safety breakdown before damage occurs-meaning, you cannot drive it until repaired.

The most a cvt oil change can cost is $250 usd using 6 quart genuine Nissan fluid $150 and a new drain plug o-ring $5 at you dealer if the labor rate is $100 / hour remember this service takes less time to compleat than an engine oil change and NO flushing or additives of any kind can be used in the cvt and the internal fluid cooler is a sealed system. The cvt is one of the best transmissions availible, so good that other top manufactures have purchesed cvt licencing from Nissan!

I have a 2003 Murano and I've had this hesitation issue since I purchased the car. I knew Nissan would have a difficult time diagnosing this and did want to pay for fixes that were wrong. Now I'm comfortable with the CVT diagnoses and brought my car to the dealer to replace tranny under extended warranty. Nissan says that process is to replace CVT valve body first and then if problems persist they will replace entire CVT transmission. So they are trying to save $$ on parts. My concern now is that how long do I have until my bandaid fails to get a replacement tranny under the extended warranty? I have 80k mi now and the warranty is up at 120K mi. They couldn't answer this.. So well see. I really like this car but will trade it for something else as soon as repairs are done.

Unfortunately but it's all true, everything written in the comments about the problems with the CVT and Transfer Case on the Nissan Murano. I was one of the unlucky ones, I purchased a 2003 Pearl White SL Murano, the first one I ever saw one, I wanted one, love the design, however, all was good and smooth riding until one day I brought Murano in for an oil change and technician pointed out a leak around the transfer case, I had some warranty left, made arrangements to replace the seal basically rebuilding... WARNING DO NOT REBUILD IT WILL STILL LEAK. I still ended up paying $1500.00, I still remember that day driving home on the highway, all of a sudden it made a loud grinding noise, anyways brought it back, says he installed seal incorrectly (such big head) and even after all that it still leaked, not worth rebuild, I then brought it to Nissan dealer cause I heard about the CVT extension warranty, found out not covered, I had no choice needed to fix, ended up paying $5000.00 for a new transfer case, in total $6500.00, must likely will never buy a Nissan again although I still have this one, if anyone has received money back for transfer case problem, please post comment.

Hi, All about nissan CVT issues...

But did anyone know the new Infiniti JX35 2013 now on the dealers, shares exacly the same CVT transmission with nissan murano (same parts and mechanical spec)!!

I asked this question if the murano CVT issue is such serious that there are so many complaints why nissan has installed the same parts on a luxury one as its Infiniti JX35 ?!?

Hi Christ,

Well, knock on wood I haven't had any problems with my CVT, (2003 Murano SL),however, definitely had problems with the transfer case (not covered under the CVT extended warranty, Nissan knows problem is not within the CVT, it's the transfer case, probably cost more to fix transfer case than CVT, there not stupid) , and from what I've heard and read, the majority of problems are from the transfer case, therefore, most likely made changes on the design of the transfer case on the Infiniti JX35 2013.

We paid 5,000 down on our 05 Murano March 4th 2012, needless to say it started acting up not even 3 wks after. We were driving home from a relatives house after dying eggs with our 3 kids. Started going up a pretty steep hill and all of the sudden it had no power, and was making an awful screeching noise. Pulled over and there was a puddle of transmission fluid that had leaked out within the few min that we were parked. Took it to a transmission shop the day after Easter. They informed us that it was definitely the transmission, but also informed us of the extended warranty that we were still covered under, so we took it to Nissan. They done diagnostics on it, said it was the seals and that wasn't covered under warranty! They wanted to charge us nearly 1,000 to replace them. We took it to a local mechanic had them replaced along with a few other things, costs us about $850. When he was finished he took it down the rd for a test drive, only to call us to say we would be better off getting Nissan to put a new transmission in it! Well we took it back to Nissan, keep in mind this is all after we had already paid them $100+ for the diagnostic the first time and they told us it wasn't the transmission........ Got a call a couple days after it had been there and they said Nissan agreed to put a new transmission in for us. Said it would take about a wk. That was last Tuesday. My husband calls today to see if we can pick it up, and they tell us that something is wrong with the transfer case! GO FIGURE RIGHT! The man told my husband that they are waiting to hear back from Nissan to see how they can "resolve this matter", and they won't here from them until next wk! This is our family vehicle that we have done without for over a month now. Things are getting just a little ridiculous, ya know!
