170 Miles to a Quarter Tank of Gas: What Car Gets the Best MPG?

You may be shocked because these cars have been around since 2000, getting around this phenomenal MPG. It is not a hybrid, or combo electric cars. They are full body cars and weigh 3000 lbs., they are equal to many more expensive cars. They are now made in the USA. They did receive Car of the Year several times.
Japanese? American? Korean? Try German.
It is true, just ask ANY owner of a Volkswagen diesel four cylinder car, whether it is Golf, Jetta or Passat. VW uses the designation TDI-turbo direct injection to separate their gasoline engines from their diesel engines. While many car companies are just now catching up to this MPG level using direct injection, VW diesels have had them for 10 years. Even the 2000 models get fantastic MPG.
I owned a Subaru Outlook wagon getting a paltry 23 MPG on the highway. Then, I discovered the VW Jetta TDI, even the used cars retained high value due to the MPG. Now, I get 31-33 MPG in the city, and up to 47 MPG on the highway plus the durability of the diesel engine which is very clean burning. In fact, if one does not tell you about it being a diesel, you would never know it. I can drive over 600 miles on a tank of fuel. While diesel is more expensive, the MPG is well worth it.
The new VW Jetta TDI runs around 18000, while a 2006-7, that gets the same gas mileage runs around $10-12000, depending of condition and miles. Even though the diesel engine may have 150-170000 miles on it, if they were maintained, even these cars can last another 100K because their engines are well built.
Seriously, consider the VW diesel cars new or used for truly great MPG beyond belief.

Impressive! I remember diesel engines used to be associated with disgusting black smoke, poor power, and freezing in the winter (my dad had to add a touch of gas to the tank of our old VW Rabbit diesel). But technology has come a long way.

Interesting? How often do you have to fill up in a month. And can they use biodiesel?
